The Lost HuiaArt work painted in acrylic of the New Zealand native Huia
Artists StatementI first learnt about this native bird as a child when I was learning to draw. I did a pencil drawing of a young Maori girl with a single Huia feather in her hair, the same as the one on the left of this painting which is laying on the detailed (Harakiki) Flax weave mat, all hand painted as well. This early drawing experience stuck with me so it has been great to revisit this as a subject now.![]() The Lost Huia / Medium, Acrylic / Size 84cm x 56cm / For Sale
Sadly this extinct bird was affected by Maori and European settlers with both hunting them for their feathers. Introduced pests also caused their extinction.
