Artists StatementThis painting of Mt Cook New Zealand illustrates that the journey is just as good as the destination. With Aoraki in the background it would be easy not to notice scenery around you but with the amazing colours and textures that are everywhere you can't help but be captured by the whole journey to Mount Cook (Aoraki).General Information About Mt Cook New ZealandThe tallest mountain in Aotearoa/ New Zealand reaching a height of 12,316ft. Aoraki Mount Cook is a sacred site for the Ngai Tahu people (who are the indigenous Maori iwi (tribe) of the area). Their ancestor Aoraki they believe was turned into the mountain and hence the name.
Ngai Tahu also believe his brothers were turned into the Southern Alps.
Mount Cook is named after the explorer Captain Cook.
As you arrive at the Mount Cook village you can't help but be taken by the stunning view of Aoraki/Mount Cook and the surrounding mountains that are part of the Southern Alps.
It is an awe inspiring experience to be in that part of the world particularly if you are an artist like me or you are interested in landscapes and New Zealand scenery. It is definitely worth taking the drive alongside lake Pukaki with Mt Cook in the distance. You need to take state highway 80 to get there. Mount Cook and the Mackenzie Country have so much to offer, there is something for everyone. You can take a Scenic flight or for those that want to do something more adventurous choose from: fishing, horse trekking, glacier tours, mountain biking or tramping hiking. If you are not that adventurous then just relax in one the of cafes, have a drink sit back and enjoy the view. Depending on your budget (and preferences) there is a variety of accommodation available. There is a top quality first class hotel with amazing views of the area (the sunset over Mount Cook would be spectacular to see from this hotel). There are also mountain huts and cabins available in Mt Cook village. |
