Pencil drawings of people

My latest projects have been sketching pencil drawings of people. The two children below were sketched as a thank you for our friends. They took us in to their home in Dunedin for a few days after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on February 22nd 2011 that caused so much damage to my home town Christchurch.

It was a very stressful and desparate time and we had to get my parents out of town. Over those few days the little girls were very entertaining and a lot of fun to be around. It is amazing how much joy little children bring at a time when life can go so horribly wrong. It is great to be able to give something back to the family in this way.

These realistic pencil drawings are very detailed. I have spent many years practising as the fundamental principles of pencil drawing are something that I learnt as a child. Many artists say that to be able to create good paintings, you should be able to draw first. I completely agree with that statement. As a young child I spent a lot of my time studying many different subjects and sketching them by pencil and that was the first stage of becoming an artist.

My advice for any young budding artist is to concentrate on their drawing skills and understand the basic drawing techniques like form, composition, shading and contrast. Taking art lessons just to understand those principles would be a good start.

Sketching faces

Sketching faces isn't easy at all. It is something that you must get exactly right, particularly if they are people you know. Technically faces and hands are considered some of the most difficult art work subjects to draw. If you are new to drawing I recommend that you start drawing general subjects like still life images i.e. fruit in a bowl. But if you want to draw faces, begin by doing many in-depth studies of single facial features in various forms i.e. eyes, ears, lips and the nose. Get a book from your library about drawing human anatomy to help. Once you build up your skills with these features, then try a to draw a face, but do it with the face looking front on not looking on an angle.

In the future I will be adding some practical sketching tips to help you with your pencil drawings of people.
