The Birthplace Of The Waimakariri River
Commisioned painting of Waimakariri River / Medium, Acrylic
I was approached by a client that wanted two paintings for her new house and she asked me to come and view the walls where the paintings are going seen and discuss her ideas.
Some on the requirements was to use deep red and gold, as a contemporary addition to the work, as this that would suit the feature colour of the room. I decided to paint red panals at the top and bottom of the works and use a gold leaf slip at the opposite corners of the paintings.
The large painting was to be a horizontal triptych and the second painting to be long vertical piece.
The subject had to relate to Canterbury so I decided on painting the Waimakariri river in the Arthur's Pass National Park. The first painting (Birthplace of the Waimakariri river) is the view looking south amongst the alps, The mood of this scene is cool and dark and yet the river shimmers with sunlight breaking through the cloud.
The second painting (Waimakariri, Journey to the sea) is from the same spot but looking north. In contrast the sky is blue and the scene has a much warmer feel to it.
The paintings look fantastic in her house and receive many comments from her freinds and guests and the colours tie in to her decor as she wanted for the room.
